The debate between custom built steam showers and prefabricated modular kits has been raging for the last 7-10 years when the kits started to make their way into the United States and Canada. Modular steam shower kits are often met with resistance from home builders and plumbers alike because it is out of their comfort zone. This I can agree with, I have been installing custom steam shower for over 20 years so I had my reservations on a prefabricated kit. On my first installation job I was called out to see the kit and was able to go through its construction and design. My first thought is this is too good to be true, everything looked great. After this I did a couple of odd job type installations for a few Oasis Platinum steam rooms in my local area and I must say I was very impressed with the outcome. The showers look amazing once installed and everything in them works the way it is supposed to. Since then I have over 50+ installations under my belt and I have started recommending modular shower kits as a cheaper alternative to some custom luxury showers.
Many of my clients own more expensive homes so I typically recommend custom build outs for their master baths; however if it's for a secondary bathroom, pool home or gym I always recommend a modular steam shower kit. The total cost of a basic custom steam shower is $8,000-$10,000. A modular kit can be installed in a day or two for around $3,500. With this being said there are some limitations on modular steam shower kits, although they do offer extras that many customers are happy with since they are fed from a ½" water line the amount of shower jets is limited. If you are looking for a true power shower nothing can compare to a custom build out.
